Wild Food in the Cerkno Region
Cerkno, with its diverse landscape, favorable climate, and exceptional biodiversity, offers a unique opportunity to explore the world of wild food and natural herbal traditions. This area is home to a rich variety of edible and medicinal wild plants, which—under expert guidance—you can learn to identify, understand, and incorporate into your everyday life.
The foraging tradition in the Cerkno region was shaped by Dario Cortese, a pioneer in the study of wild food in Slovenia, who dedicated part of his creative life to this very environment. Today, his work is continued by Darja Vrana, who brings knowledge of wild plants, their uses, and the importance of a respectful relationship with nature closer to visitors through guided outdoor experiences.
Visitors can choose between shorter themed walks or more in-depth foraging workshops. In addition to plant identification, these experiences provide practical knowledge on preparation and use. The experience can be enriched with a visit to the private library and home where Dario Cortese created— a space he named “Base Camp Cerkno,” a place of peace and inspiration.
